Buying guide: Fluids & Chemicals

Specifications matter more here than anywhere else in the catalog. Engine oil is listed with its viscosity and its manufacturer approval where the supplier provides it, because the wrong approval can void a warranty on a late-model engine. Brake fluid is sold by DOT rating, and mixing DOT 4 into a DOT 5 silicone system ruins the seals.

Aerosol paints and coatings are classified as hazardous for transport, so they ship by ground only and cannot be returned once opened. Refrigerant is sold in sealed containers and is subject to the same restriction.

Additives are listed separately from the base fluid so you can tell whether a product is a complete fluid or a treatment added to one.
